Handle Your Plumbing Problems With These Tips

Sudden or ongoing plumbing problems can damage your home as well as your belongings. Use the tips offered in this article to help you fix your plumbing issues.

Frozen Pipe

If your water pipe has frozen, start water running in the faucet closest to the frozen pipe. This will give excess water somewhere to drain as the ice in the pipe thaws. Letting the water drain out will relieve pressure in the frozen pipe, which will reduce the chances of it bursting and damaging your home.

If you have noisy pipes that sound like hammering or squeaking, this is something that is easy to fix. What you will have to do is anchor any pipes that are exposed. If pipes are located in the floor, ceiling or walls, you might want to have a professional help you complete the project.

Avoid bleach tablets, blue toilet deodorizers or the other odor removers inside your toilet. These products will reduce the smell, but they will also cause problems with the rubber gaskets. Over time, the damage will accumulate and could eventually stop the toilet from functioning at all.

Check for floor damage around your toilet. If the floor around your toilet feels softer than the rest of the floor in your bathroom, there’s damage you need to address. Sit on the toilet and move from side to side, placing one foot on the ground. As you do, see if the floor lacks sturdiness or feels otherwise soft. Discovering this issue sooner can mean big savings for your checking account, as compared to finding out about it later.

A strainer positioned over a drain can prevent stoppage by collecting food particles as they try to enter the drain. Whenever large particles become trapped in the strainer, remove them. Keep the bathroom drains cleaned out too.

To prevent pipes from freezing, don’t let temperatures drop under freezing in your home, and insulate external pipes. Obviously, frozen pipes occur due to freezing environmental conditions. If you are lucky, you will only experience a minor inconvenience until the pipes thaw. However, your pipes can explode, as well – making a huge plumbing bill.

Keep the drains in your bathtub working properly by pouring a cup’s worth of baking soda and than a cup’s worth of vinegar directly down your drain every month. This will cause the vigorous bubbling you may remember from the “volcano” in a grade school science project, so be sure to close the drain with a stopper. Let it sit a few minutes, then wash it all away with boiling water. By taking these steps, you have a good chance of ridding your pipes of hair and soap scum.

To keep your garbage disposal working at its best, use plenty of cold water when you turn it on. Cold water keeps blades sharp and allows for smoother disposal. If you use hot water, any grease in the disposal will turn into liquid, while causes pipe clogging.

Cleaning an aerator can remove sediment buildup that causes low water pressure. The aerator should be removed and taken apart. Then, clean with a tiny brush swabbed in vinegar. Rinse your aerator, put it back together and back into the faucet. Once the aerator has been cleared, your water pressure should improve.

You can resolve most toilet clogs yourself. Try a plunger first. If plunging the toilet doesn’t seem to clear up a clog, check the toilet’s water level. If it’s too low, try filling a bucket with warm water. Open the toilet’s tank, and pour the water in. The water needs to be at a low level again in order to repeat the process.

If you have grout stuck in the line, it probably won’t help you cleaning it all by yourself. You can attempt to break up some of the grout which works to help the line go a bit smoother. This works best if your pipes are plastic instead of metal. You might have to get a professional to get rid of this issue.

You do not have to turn the water on when you are putting things in the garbage disposal. Although some say that running water will help keep the disposal running smoothly, this isn’t always the case. It could even cause food to stick to the blades of the disposal, creating damage.

If you have to take out a clean-out plug but you aren’t having any success, two ways can assist you in doing this. The first method involves a hammer and chisel to loosen the fitting. You can also chisel into the plug.

Use filters on all drains to prevent debris that might clog the pipes from getting through. You should clean your kitchen sink’s strainer every time there is a large particle that’s trapped in it. You should also clean your bathtub strainer any time it is slow to drain.

You can take the stress and expense out of major plumbing problems by addressing issues while they are still small. You just need to do a bit of research and call in some professional help, if needed. The above plumbing advice can help you to avoid major fiascoes.
