You May Be Able To Fix Your Own Pipes

It is common for plumbing problems to arise in a newly purchased home. These problems are usually in the kitchen or bathroom. Really, at some point every homeowner will deal with some kind of plumbing problem. This article contains some information to help when that situation occurs.

To deal with a frozen pipe, turn on the faucet closest to the pipe. This gives the water a place to exit as the pipe defrosts. As such, bursting can be halted, saving you from even more costly damages.

Don’t use bleach tablets, odor removers or those blue tablets in your toilet. While they are good at removing odors, they have a detrimental effect on the parts of the toilet that are rubber. This can make it not function correctly and may even break it.

You never want to pay for a job until it is complete, and this goes for a plumber as well. You might have to put money down initially before the plumber begins the job. However, do not pay everything up front; instead, only pay once the job is successfully completed. This ensures that the plumber will not abandon the job midway, and will also care about the quality of their work more.

If your home has well water and you start seeing orange or pink stains, that is from iron in your water supply. You should purchase a water softener to use, or ask a local business to make a visit to your residence and resolve the issue for you.

Garbage Disposal

Cleaning your in-sink garbage disposal can extend its lifetime significantly. Keep your garbage disposal fresh and running by using dish soap, cherry pits and lemon rinds regularly.

You should avoid using blue toilet tablets, bleach tablets or any other odor removers in your toilet. It may help to get rid of your toilet’s odors, but it will damage any rubber parts, causing your toilet to malfunction, or even break down.

To keep things flowing smoothly through the drain of your bathtub, each month you should feed it baking soda, one cup’s worth, with a cup of vinegar to chase it. This will cause the vigorous bubbling you may remember from the “volcano” in a grade school science project, so be sure to close the drain with a stopper. Let it sit a few minutes, then wash it all away with boiling water. By taking these steps, you have a good chance of ridding your pipes of hair and soap scum.

Be sure that the overflow holes are free of debris. Overflow holes drain sink that fill too full and may go unnoticed until they are needed. As you routinely look for things needing attention, check to be sure that the overflow holes are clear and unblocked.

Always use cold water when your garbage disposal is running. Cold water keeps the blades sharpened, giving you optimal performance whenever it is used. When you use hot water, any grease that is in the garbage will melt and be more prone to stopping up your drain.

If your toilet is clogged, the water level in the toilet is low, and a plunger is not doing the trick, you may be able to resolve the problem by pouring a bucket of warm water into the toilet from waist level or higher. After the water level in the toilet bowl has gone down, you can repeat the procedure until the blockage is cleared.

An incorrectly installed hose from the kitchen sink to the dishwasher can cause unwanted water to drain into the dishwasher. The hose must lead uphill then back downhill to prevent the combining of water from each device.

A good tip to use when using your garbage disposal is to leave the water turned off. Although some say that running water will help keep the disposal running smoothly, this isn’t always the case. It could even cause food to stick to the blades of the disposal, creating damage.

Be certain that your toilet does not have a leak. The easiest way to perform this test is by placing a few food coloring drops in your toilet’s upper tank. If you see the coloring after a few seconds, you will know that there is a problem with your toilet that needs immediate attention.

In order to ensure that your garbage disposal will last for as long as your home, keep it clean on a regular basis. By regularly incorporating a routine using a combination of dish soap, lemon rinds, and even cherry pits, you can keep your disposal running smoothly and smelling as fresh as the day it was installed.

Main water cut off valve is a very important piece of information you should be aware of, and you should know exactly where it is. A water meter should be located on or near it. Also, locate additional shut off valves for toilets, sinks, washers and any other device that runs off of your water supply. Make sure all the members of your family know where the cut-off valves are. In addition, add markings to show how they should be turned off.

Plumbing Problems

Calling a plumber for every issue will add up to a huge bill, so it’s important to deal with small plumbing issues yourself as they arise. Invest in the proper tools, and learn the proper techniques for common plumbing problems. If you ever experience plumbing problems, the above advice can help you to solve them calmly and with confidence.

A great maintenance routine for bathtub drains is to pour baking soda and vinegar into the drain opening once a month. This will cause the vigorous bubbling you may remember from the “volcano” in a grade school science project, so be sure to close the drain with a stopper. Wait until the chemical reaction runs its course, then flush the pipes by pouring in a kettle full of boiling water. This procedure will clear the hair and soap scum out of your pipes.
